How to Recognise a Phishing Attack

Modified on Tue, 23 Jun at 3:16 PM

Phishing is one of the most common ways people lose access to their crypto accounts. Knowing what it looks like is your best defence.

You are the sole owner of your wallet. Wirex One is non-custodial — we do not hold your keys, cannot access your wallet, and cannot recover your funds if access is lost. It is your responsibility to keep your private key, Passkey, and authenticator app safe, backed up, and always accessible. Never delete them, never lose them, and never share them. If you lose access to all your authentication methods and your private key, access to your funds cannot be restored — by anyone.

What is phishing?

Phishing is when a scammer impersonates a trusted source — such as Wirex One — to trick you into revealing sensitive information: your password, private key, 2FA codes, or personal details.

It can appear as an email, a text message, a fake website, a social media message, or even a phone call.

How to spot a phishing attempt

Fake emails

  • The sender's email address looks almost right but has a subtle difference — e.g. support@wirex-one.co instead of the official domain.
  • The email creates urgency: "Your account will be suspended", "Verify now or lose access."
  • It contains a link to a website that looks like Wirex One but isn't.
  • It asks you to confirm your private key, seed phrase, or password.

Fake websites

  • The URL is slightly different from the real one — extra characters, hyphens, or a different domain extension.
  • The page looks identical to Wirex One but asks for sensitive credentials.
  • There is no padlock / HTTPS in the browser bar.

Fake social media and messaging

  • Someone claims to be Wirex One support on Telegram, WhatsApp, Twitter/X, or Discord.
  • They offer to "help" you with an issue but ask for your private key or login details.
  • They send you a link to a "special offer" or "urgent security alert."

Fake phone calls

  • A caller claims to be from Wirex One security or support.
  • They say your account has been compromised and ask you to confirm your details or move your funds.

What Wirex One will never do

Wirex One will never ask for your private key, seed phrase, password, or 2FA code — through any channel.

We will never:

  • Ask you to move your funds to a "safe" wallet
  • Request remote access to your device
  • Contact you via Telegram, WhatsApp, or Discord asking for account details
  • Send you a link and ask you to log in to resolve an issue

What to do if you suspect phishing

1

Do not click any links in the message.

2

Do not provide any information — close the page or end the call.

3

Go directly to the app — never follow a link to log in.

4

Report it — forward suspicious emails to Wirex One support and report fake social media profiles.

5

Check your account — if you entered any details on a suspicious site, change your password and contact Wirex One support immediately.

FAQ

I received an email from Wirex One asking me to verify my account. Is it real?
Check the sender's email address carefully against the official Wirex One domain. If in doubt, do not click the link — go directly to the app or contact support to verify.
Someone on Telegram is offering to help me with my Wirex One account. Is this legitimate?
No. Wirex One does not provide support via Telegram. This is a scam. Do not share any information and report the account.
I clicked a phishing link but didn't enter any details. Am I safe?
You are likely safe, but remain cautious. Some links can install malware just by being opened. Run a security check on your device and monitor your account activity closely.
I entered my details on a fake site. What should I do?
Act immediately — change your password, move your funds to safety, and contact Wirex One support. If you shared your private key, treat the wallet as fully compromised.
How can I report a phishing attempt to Wirex One?
Contact Wirex One support via the official Help Centre or in-app chat. Provide as much detail as possible — the message, the link, and any screenshots.
