Never Share Your Private Key

Modified on Tue, 23 Jun at 3:16 PM

Your private key is the master key to your funds. Anyone who has it has full, unrestricted access to everything in your wallet — no password, no verification, no way to stop them.

You are the sole owner of your wallet. Wirex One is non-custodial — we do not hold your keys, cannot access your wallet, and cannot recover your funds if access is lost. It is your responsibility to keep your private key, Passkey, and authenticator app safe, backed up, and always accessible. Never delete them, never lose them, and never share them. If you lose access to all your authentication methods and your private key, access to your funds cannot be restored — by anyone.

What is a private key?

A private key is a unique cryptographic string that proves ownership of your wallet. Unlike a password, it cannot be reset, changed, or recovered by anyone — including Wirex One. It exists only once, and only you should ever have it.

When you export your private key from Wirex One, you are taking full custody of your wallet outside the app. Keep it safe.

The golden rule

Wirex One will never ask for your private key. Ever. No Wirex One employee, support agent, or representative will ever ask you to share your private key — not by email, not in chat, not on a call, not on any platform. If anyone asks for it, it is a scam.

Where to keep your private key safe

  • Write it down on paper and store it in a secure, private location.
  • Never store it in a messaging app, email, notes app, or cloud storage.
  • Never take a screenshot of it and leave it in your camera roll.
  • Never share it in any online form, website, or support chat.
  • Consider a hardware wallet or encrypted offline storage for long-term security.

What happens if someone else gets your private key?

They gain complete, irreversible control over your wallet. They can transfer all your funds instantly — and there is no way to reverse it, freeze it, or recover it. Not by Wirex One. Not by anyone.

FAQ

Why does Wirex One ask me to export my private key when deleting my account?
When you delete your account, Wirex One prompts you to export your private key so you don't permanently lose access to your funds. This is for your protection — once your account is deleted, Wirex One cannot restore access. Export it, store it safely, and only then proceed with deletion.
What if I've already shared my private key with someone?
Act immediately. Move your funds to a new wallet as fast as possible — consider the compromised wallet to be fully exposed. Contact Wirex One support and do not send any more funds to that wallet.
Can Wirex One recover my funds if my private key is stolen?
No. Blockchain transactions are irreversible. If someone uses your private key to move your funds, there is no technical mechanism to recover them.
What if I lose my private key?
As long as your Wirex One account is active, you can access your funds through the app. Your private key becomes critical only if you need to access your wallet outside of Wirex One — for example, after deleting your account.
